C21Media: Paul Epstein calls for return to ad-supported TV to solve writers’ pay dispute
Paul Epstein recently spoke with C21Media about the ongoing writers’ strike which is causing a wave of impact across the industry.
He argues that in the new age of streaming services, executives are expecting writers to work on shorter contracts similar to workers in the gig economy, making writers’ work less secure and stable. Now that this kind of streaming has passed its peak, Epstein believes that streaming companies are trying to cut costs wherever possible, making it more difficult for writers to find good work
To solve the problems at the core of the dispute, Epstein believes that the industry should move to restore the ‘middle class’ of TV in order to open up more writing opportunities. He describes this as ‘accessible, casual-viewing TV’.
